چکیده
This paper surveys an area of nonlinear functional analysis and its applications. The main application is to the existence and multiplicity of periodic solutions of a possible mathematical models of nonlinearly supported bending beams, and their possible application to nonlinear behavior as observed in large-amplitude flexings in suspension bridges. A second area, periodic flexings in a floating beam, also nonlinearly supported, is covered a t the end of the paper.

Nonlinear Resonance in Asymmetric Oscillators
We study the periodic solutions of equations with asymmetric nonlinearities ``at resonance'' with the Fuc @ k spectrum. We compute the associated topological degree and prove existence, multiplicity, and stability of large-amplitude oscillations for equations with a small friction term. Such equations can be viewed, e.g., as simple models for investigating vertical oscillations of long-span sus...
متن کاملBifurcation of Periodic Solutions in Symmetric Models of Suspension Bridges
We consider a nonlinear model for time-periodic oscillations of a suspension bridge. Under some additional restrictive assumptions we describe our model by a standard bifurcation scheme which allows us to use global bifurcation theorems and make some new conclusions.

Abstract. We prove the existence of small amplitude periodic solutions, for a large Lebesgue measure set of frequencies, in the nonlinear beam equation with a weak quadratic and velocity dependent nonlinearity and with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Such nonlinear PDE can be regarded as a simple model describing oscillations of flexible structures like suspension bridges in presence of an unifo...
متن کاملPeriodic Oscillations in the Analysis of Algorithms and Their Cancellations
A large number of results in analysis of algorithms contain fluctuations. A typical result might read “The expected number of . . . for large n behaves like log2 n + constant + delta(log2 n), where delta(x) is a periodic function of period one and mean zero.” Examples include various trie parameters, approximate counting, probabilistic counting, radix exchange sort, leader election, skip lists,...
متن کاملEffects of Geometric Nonlinearity on Stress Analysis in Large Amplitude Vibration of Moderately Thick Annular Functionally Graded Plate
This paper deals with the nonlinear free vibration of thick annular functionally graded material plates. The thickness is assumed to be constant. Material properties are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The formulations are based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory and...
